What is Bioinfomatics?

Bioinformatics involves techniques used in applied mathematics, informatics, statistics, and computer science to solve biological problems. The study of bioinformatics extracts useful information from "noisy" data, particularly focusing on algorithm development and specific computational methods to acquire, store, organize, archive, analyze, or visualize biological data. For example, scientists use bioinformatics to assemble DNA sequences from the "reads" produced in DNA sequencing, such as those created in Venter's shotgun sequencing approach. Major research efforts in bioinformatics include sequence alignment, gene finding, genome assembly, protein structure alignment, protein structure prediction, prediction of gene expression, and protein-protein interactions.
